The Puma Cali Story

Puma released several important tennis sneakers in the 1980s. Perhaps the most fondly remembered is the California, a laid-back ladies' shoe that captured the feeling of sun-kissed afternoons on the tennis court. Fast forward a few decades, and these sweet kicks have been given a fresh lease on life courtesy of brand ambassador Selena Gomez, who lit up Instagram with photo shoots featuring the latest Puma Cali range.

Ace Tennis Wear

The original was designed to be a practical tennis shoe for girls, with a low top silhouette and clean lines that would make it welcome in the most exclusive of racquet clubs. The new model is much more of a fashion sneaker. Puma has pulled out all the stops when it comes to styling and branding. Note the cool way the tongue and ankle are stamped with the company logo, and the brand name printed across the heel in bold, graphic letters.

Top Design

One of the most eye-catching features of the Puma Cali is its thick, stacked sole. More aggressively styled than on the '80s version, it's tooled with vertical ridges and angular cutaways. Also, check out the formspring - the trademark wavy design that runs along the side of the shoe - and observe how it has been elegantly picked out with lines of perforations. Combined with strong two and three-tone designs and block colours, it all adds up to look that's subtly streamlined and contoured.

Styling Tips

These sneakers really pop as part of an athleisure outfit, whether that's a crop top and leggings, or a fitted tee and high-waisted shorts. Add a zip-up hoodie for layers. Alternatively, you can take inspiration from the sneakers' '80s roots and go retro with baggy jeans or joggers and a statement puffa jacket. Or for an altogether softer vibe, try teaming the shoes with a simple jersey shift dress.
